LOT DETAILS

Materials:

oil on canvas, oval

Size Notes:

This portrait was part of the collection of Mrs Huitema-van Bredehoff de Vicq. When she moved to Indonesia in the 1930s, she put her art collection on loan and display in the Centraal Museum, Utrecht, until she returned in 1948.

Edition:

The canvas has been relined (wax). The painted surface seems to be in good condition, with a nice, fine and dense craquelure pattern consistent of the painting's age. A tiny restored damage of circa 3 mm can be seen in the upper right corner next to the curtain. The colours seem to be nicely preserved. When inspected under ultraviolet light the varnish layer fluoresces, showing some retouchings along the left and right edges (possibly due to the old frame?), strenghtenings above the sitter's wig, the contours of the ledge and some dark areas. The craquelure pattern in the sitter's face has been touched up somewhat. Frame: Carved and giltwood frame with a motif of leaves and acorns.
